Some Traditions Need Change

Sinterklaas is a holiday celebrated annually in the Netherlands, on the night before Saint Nicholas day. Zwarte Piet is an important figure of the holiday and has been the center of controversy in the Netherlands over the past years. Traditionally, Zwarte Piet is portrayed as a black man, since he is a Moor from Spain, but stories have changed and many believe that he turned black by going through the chimney. The appearance of this character has angered many as they feel it is racist, since actors portraying Zwarte Piet paint their face black, put on red lipstick, earrings and curly wigs. This documentary will give insight into the debate revolving around Zwarte Piet and give possible suggestions for how this controversy can be settled.
