National VVD says poster was local initiative

Since elections are around the corner, political parties have been campaigning throughout the country. In Rotterdam, one campaign has sparked national debate, with its daring text “In Rotterdam we speak Dutch”. The VVD has received a lot of negative feedback, with people being outraged about the “racist” slogan. The national party released a statement, claiming the poster was made regionally, thus does not represent the party as a whole. The person who is responsible for the poster, Jaenette Baljeu, says to have no regrets, and still stands behind the poster. According to Baljeu, VVD Rotterdam deliberately chose for a daring poster in order to spark discussion. Either way, whether the VVD achieves political success these elections or not, at least they achieved their goal of sparking discussion.
