Winterswijk celebrates Mondriaan’s 142nd birthday

Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, or as most people know him: Piet Mondriaan, would have reached the age of 142 this weekend. As one of the most famous Dutch painters, along with great names as Rembrandt and Van Gogh, he is known all around the world for his minimalistic works of art. The museum in Winterswijk recently underwent some changes and is now run by the Netherlands’ youngest museum director: Anne Kremers, who studied art history at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Villa Mondriaan, where he resided when he grew up, honored him this weekend.

As a special birthday event and to celebrate the museum is open six days a week again, Villa Mondriaan was open and filled with festivities on 7th, 8th en 9th of March. What other – Dutch – way to celebrate a birthday with cake, coffee and lots of people? All visitors this weekend received a discount of 50% on their museum ticket and were welcomed with a piece of cake and a cup of coffee that they could enjoy in the painter’s sunny backyard.
